The Bible and Hell
Tuesday, October 04, 2005
I am going to try to not make this post too long so here's a few of the Scriptures I have found concerning hell.....I believe the bible describes it as a very real place. So perhaps many of you will have insight as to these scriptures.
Matthew 12:40 talks about Jesus descending into hell..."For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly: so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the HEART OF THE EARTH. It sounds to me like hell is in the center of the earth.
The man in (Lk.)16:24 cries: ". . .I am tormented in this FLAME."In Matthew 13:42, Jesus says: "And shall cast them into a FURNACE OF FIRE: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."In (Mt.25:41), Jesus says: "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting FIRE,. . ."(Rev.20:15) says, " And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the LAKE OF FIRE."
Jesus says of the man in Luke 16: 23 "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in TORMENTS. "24 ". . . for I am TORMENTED in this FLAME."28 ". . .PLACE OF TORMENT
I believe the Bible describes it as weeping (Matt 8:12), wailing (Matt 13:42), gnashing of teeth (Matt 13:50), darkness (Matt 25:30), flames (Luke 16:24), burning (Isa 33:14), torments (Luke 16:23), everlasting punishment! Jesus says in Matthew 25:41, "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."In Matthew 13:42, Jesus says: "And shall cast them into a FURNACE OF FIRE :there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
Rev. 14:11: "The smoke of their TORMENT ascendeth up for EVER AND EVER: and they have NO REST DAY NOR NIGHT."
In Numbers 16, is this an earthquake or is it people falling into hell alive!???? "And THE EARTH OPENED HER MOUTH, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive INTO THE PIT, and the EARTH CLOSED UPON THEM:"( Num.)16:32-33 In Mark 9:46, Jesus says about hell: "Where THEIR WORM dieth not, and the fire is not quenched."Rev 14:10) says, " . . . and he shall be tormented with fire and BRIMSTONE . . ." And Job 18 describes the " . . . PLACE of him that knoweth not God" (vs 21), in verse 15 as, " . . . BRIMSTONE shall be scattered upon his habitation."
I could share even more scriptures but this post would be too long, but one thing I want to bring to your attention that I am curious about is where Jesus talks about where their worm never dies. I have heard that interpreted different ways. One being perhaps that Jesus was talking about our bodies??? Since as a Christian we will have a new and glorified body like our Father God, will those whose Father is the devil take on a body like his, which is described as a dragon or serpent?
Another thing I have heard is scientists have discovered eight foot worms called Riftia near the ocean vents where fire is leaking out in the bottom of the ocean. From my understanding the crust of the earth has different degrees of thickness. I mean where we are standing is about 15 miles thick but in places on the ocean floor it is only maybe a mile thick, in my own understanding I am thinking...okay, these worms live only near these fire seeping vents in the ocean, so is this where they are comiing from? Is hell infested with eight foot long worms?
Don't think I am nuts, this is not something I spend alot of time on, I have just researched it on my own and have heard several testimonies about what someone said they saw when they were pronounced dead and brought back. I am thinking like Maria at http://girlmiami.blogspot.com/, it's not a place I want to ever go!
So please give me your input, fts http://www.followthatstar.com/ ....you seem to have studied alot, can you tell me anything more or maybe make this clearer?

In decades hell has always frightened - and amazed - people. Something you were not really allowed to talk about but still its curiosity was worth thinking of.
During 12-1400 centuries here in Iceland and other Nordic Countries women that were told being connected to the devil was burnt at the stake. We called them witches. First female who was burnt at the stake was the nun Katrina from Kirkjubergakloster (a village on the east coast of Iceland) After that hundreds of women suffered this punishment. This punishment period ended in the middle of 1500 century.
All of God's children are born in his image. I think that even those that go to hell will still have a human type body, but it will be able to stand the fires of hell for eternity.
your blog is great!
Wow, lots to learn and take in here! I am absolutely fascinated with these new facts and/or ideas that everyone has put in! I'm afraid that I have yet to study all books in the Bible, so much of this is new to me. Many of these verses I have heard though, about the fire and torment. I never had thought that when people go to hell they could take on a body like his though, that is interesting. Love this topic, love learning more about it!
Could “the heart of the earth” simply refer to the tomb? It was in the earth. For some reason, the church I grew up in vehemently opposed the idea that Jesus went to hell. I don’t really know why, I just remember people getting their panties all twisted up about it.
The animals around the vents are completely aquatic creatures, mortal.
I suspect that bodies in Hell are just as eternal as those in Heaven.
Thanks Everyone, some really interesting comments here. I have enjoyed hearing your beliefs and it has also enlightened me and made me think a bit.
Mike if you post here, I can't leave a comment on your blog but I have been visiting it daily.
Wow interesting tidbits of scripture and information!!! I am particurally fascinated by those worms you speak of perhaps when I have some extra time I will look them up.
My church has never said that Jesus didn't go to hell, but they also never said that he did.
My hubby's church growing up, though, said he did. Why? Because he had to defeat the devil on his own territory. And THAT is why Jesus has the power over the accuser.
Just my take on it. Thanks for posting this, dear. You rock!
My understanding is that the three days Jesus was *dead* He spent taking our punushment for us. I've also heard he created the Lake of Fire during that time. I really don't have enough knowledge on that to speak with any degree of authority.
If the Lake of Fire is the place of eternal punishment, then I'm guessing the body -- in whatever form it is in -- will last forever to accomplish this. Ed likened it once to being burned with sulphur, and the torment will be never-ending.
The center of the earth is molten, hence the lava flows from volcanos. It makes sense to humans to think of that as hell, and who knows. There's also thiers of heaven and angels... and so much we can't fathom. Jesus told us there was much He wanted to tell but couldn't, because we couldn't comprehend it, but that all would be made known one day (paraphrasing).
Please let me state I am by no means a Bible scholar, or even close to it. What little I've learned is from reading, leading home teams, being a Developer, and from cramming a lot of material into my head on the book of Revelation. I just try to retain some to regurgitate when asked. ;-)
The reaity of hell scared me to become a Christian. I would have never imagined the glory of knowing Him.
