Eight Cow Wife

Thursday, February 09, 2006

Have you ever seen the movie, "Johnny Lingo?" One of our volunteers used it with his sermon this past week and it was an incredible. The sermon was basically about our identity and self worth. He brought out in the movie how this young girl's life had been shaped by the things her parents said to her, the things the village said and she believed them all to be true. She was told she was worth nothing, she was ugly and so on.

Johnny Lingo had grown up with this girl and he had loved her all his life. He knew she was beautiful and he wanted to marry her when they were grown. When a man wanted to marry a woman in the village, he would go to the father and offer cows for the hand of the daughter. Most of the women in the village had been bought for at least two to three cows. No one thought this girl was worth even one cow, but her father asked for three cows and the whole village laughed. But Johnny Lingo said he would pay eight cows for her, that three cows were too small of an amount. Everyone was shocked, but Johnny wanted her to be able to talk with the women of the village and proclaim she was an eight cow wife!

She ended up getting her identity and self esteem back and whole village was shocked at how beautiful she was, her father even told Johnny Lingo he had been cheated, that she was worth ten cows.

The sermon ended on the note that some of us have been lied to all our life. The Lord places so much value on our lives that He gave everything. When the invitation was given, Chuck said, "is there anyone here who would like to give their life to Christ? and if there is stand up boldly and say here I am Lord!" Of course he meant in your mind when you stand, you were saying Here i am Lord, but this kid, his name is Pedro jumped to his feet and said, "HERE I AM LORD!" I thought wow, was he ever bold, he then went up to the front of the room and prayed with Calvin the speaker and we all hugged him and welcomed our little brother in the family.

Until Next Time....Hugs to you all..........

Great story.

We are all products of what we have been led to believe. Our healing comes when we are led to believe we are loved by God.

And He is gracious to love us!

Wow! That is such a great analogy. God paid lots and lots of cows for me, when nobody else thought I was worth any.

Great story Dana. Lava and I were just talking about this movie the other night. I haven't seen it, but I saw another great "mormon" movie with Anne Hathaway called The Other Side of Heaven. I think you will really like it because it's more about this man's dedication to God and the people who he was being a missionary to rather than the actual religion itself.

I have seen people with such shattered self-esteem they couldn't think for themselves. That's a great story. :)

It's important for parents of small children to realize the impact their words have on their kids; they can stay with them forever. That's why I love to build up my little ones with things like..."you can do it!" ... "wow, you're good!" ... "that's awesome! show me how you did that!" I come up with new ones all the time. It's great to see their faces light up.

What a wonderful sermon that must've been. We just tried out a new church last Sunday and we were equally impressed. At the end the pastor said, "I know this is unconventional, and I don't usually do this, but God told me very strongly to ask people to stand up if they want to become born-again. So, if you want to become born-again today, please stand."

I leaned over to SaurKid and whispered "Oh boy, is THAT a mistake. I can't believe he'd put people on the spot like that!"

And then one person stood...and then another...and then another...

I ate my words. I was also very impressed to see that God definately had been working in the life of that pastor.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same movie, but I saw something like this - exact same story - when I was in elementary school.

Throughout the whole movie, they showed the tribe and how they lived, but they never showed the girl. At the end, when they finally showed the girl, she was thin and pretty!

The narrator made some comment about the girl being attractive in our western society standards, when the rest of the tribe thought being large or over weight was attractive. I remember wanting to live in that tribe - I would be SO accepted there!
