What About Love?

Sunday, January 28, 2007

Our world is filled with words about love, or with the word love itself. Popular songs, greeting cards, romantic books, television programs, all proclaim love. But what is love really? We yearn to love and be loved but see few examples of real love. Real love is scarce, it is selfless, caring, sharing and even dying. The word love has been twisted in meaning and torn from context.

Truth and integrity are endangered species. We harbor ill feelings, we are unforgiving, we remember the bad and allow it to choke out the good. I don't see many examples of real pure love, and when I do it makes me cry. I am not always loving, I am not always patient and kind, I don't always reach out and touch someone to try to make the world a better place, sometimes I am self seeking and self serving. I wish I could say I was all those good things, but I would be lying to you, to myself and to God, so I'll just put it out there, it's the truth....I am not all I should be.

1 Cor. 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails.

No one among us is all we should be. Thank God for His mercy and grace.
I was thinking about our soldiers. How much they love this beautiful land of our that they are willing to die for it. Love is so all encompassing its hard to comprehend. One thing is certain, we can never love enough.
Thanks for a thought provoking post.

It would be super great if we could follow the scripture in 1st Cor: 13-4 thru 8 .Unfortunately many folks let their selfishness ruin their lives and relationships and don't realize that they can always share Gods Love but can't take back unwanted words that destroys ! Blessings. RON.

the other day i was thinking about some people at church that i didn't like and i was kind of praying... saying"Lord, what I can I do about them? the fact that some prominent people in the church are less than they should be and that i expect them to be... one in particular has hurt me, so I heard Him say "Love them anyway"

Oh, this is good. It reminds me of John 17:26 where Jesus cries out to the Father and says "Oh Father, the same kind of love that you have for me, would you put that kind of love in them?".....What kind of love is that?????....And how will it ever fit into my heart? My prayer is....enlarge my heart so I can love others like you love them, Lord. (only by His grace I'm sure).

When I see examples of real love, I too, get emotional because it's rare and it's beautiful. I'm learning not to take it for granted because so much fake love is out there. If you find the real thing, embrace it. I want to have a deeper love with my family...and I'm working on it.

None of us are perfect and love really is a hard word to describe. There are so many kinds of love. We all can work on loving more.

Dana, what a beautiful post on love. God's love and grace amazes me because I don't deserve it, but He chooses to pour it out on me anyway.

Love sure covers all. There is no sin so huge, our God's love can't cover.

Thank You for this post.

I love I Corinthians 13's definition of love. It leaves nothing to the imagination.

Great post. I think society has diminished the meaning and quality of "love". You hear more sayings like, "I love pizza" or "I love to play hockey", etc. It's almost like love doesn't mean much anymore...that it doesn't hold the "power" it should have.

I am finally getting to your questions that you asked a couple of weeks ago. I use the New American Standard when studying Precept Ministries Bible Studies. That is the Bible version that my first Pastor used and that Kay Arthur who leads the studies uses. When I was in Bible Study Fellowship I used the NIV. I also used the NIV when I lived in Philadelphia because that was the version that that Pastor used. My current Pastor uses KJV. I carry my NIV Study Bible when I go to curch and take sermon notes in the margins. When I study Bible during the week I use my New American Standard. Various verses I have memorized and learned in different ways.

Regarding the children, we decided not to have Kayleigh go this past year to Boarding School with her siblings, but intend that this next year she will go and be with them. They are all doing very well. I am awed (is that correct spelling). In my last blog (not the one I just did) I talk a bit about where I am at this point in my life with work and kids (but not many specifics with respect to the children).

I always enjoy getting caught up with your blog and respect what you do and how you walk. May God bless you and your family!

Hi Sister,

Great Post!

My ideal about love, I felt was summarized by our Pastor as below when he shared about 'Finding the Perfect Partner in Life' among our beloved child of most high God:-)

"When it comes to daily living where all the Romance wear off, one need rock solid love. A love that sees you at the worst and still love you. A love that will forgive you, when you fall down and pick you up again...You want someone, who loves you because he/she can't live without you..."
